ANZSPR members include general radiologists who have an interest in paediatric imaging and specialist paediatric radiologists who have completed additional subspecialty training in paediatric imaging and primarily see children in their day to day practice. There are members and associate members of ANZSPR in the imaging departments of children’s hospitals, general hospitals and private practices throughout Australia, New Zealand and around the world.

ANZSPR promotes high quality, low radiation imaging for children through a child and family centred approach.

Statement of Support for Paediatric Radiologists Engaged in Child Protection Radiology

The Australian and New Zealand Society of Paediatric Radiologists (ANZSPR) expresses its full support for paediatric radiologists and all professionals engaged in the sensitive and complex work of child protection radiology, and for those who uphold the highest standards of child protection in Australia and New Zealand.

Imaging in suspected abuse cases is conducted with rigorous diagnostic processes, ethics, and compassion. Paediatric radiologists provide accurate and unbiased medical information in a collaborative, multidisciplinary process which includes paediatricians, other medical specialists, social services, and police. All parties recognise the sensitivity of these assessments for families. Paediatric radiologists participate in ongoing review of clinical practice, continuing professional education, and peer review to optimise standards of practice.

The protection of vulnerable children is a collective responsibility, requiring the integrity and effective functioning of judicial and clinical systems. While encouraging fair, informed, and responsible scrutiny of these systems, ANZSPR stands unequivocally in solidarity with paediatric radiologists and those who work to identify and prevent abuse.

This statement aligns with the consensus of qualified experts in child protection work, such as the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), European Society of Paediatric Radiology (ESPR), the Royal College of Radiologists (RCR), and the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH).
